The British School of Brussels (BSB)
The school was founded in 1969 and officially opened in 1970. It has a beautiful site of ten hectares, surrounded by woodlands and lakes near the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren, and is 20 minutes’ drive from central Brussels. The school is a coeducational non-selective day school for students aged 1-18, with over 1,350 currently on roll. There is an Early Childhood Centre for children aged 1-3. Currently 34% of the students are British and there are 70 nationalities represented in the school.
A British-based curriculum is provided within an international context with courses leading to GCSE and IGCSE examinations at 16 years old and GCE A levels, as well as Vocational Courses (BTEC in Business, Hospitality, Sport and Applied Science). The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is offered (bilingual French & Dutch options also) in addition to A levels. French is compulsory from the age of 4. To complement the existing English-medium teaching, the school has established a Bilingual French/ English programme for ages 4-14 years.
As an international school operating in the heart of one of the world’s most multilingual countries, the school offers Dutch from age 7-11 (mother tongue and beginners) as well as the choices of German and Spanish from age 11 as an additional language. There is an English Language Immersion programme for non-native English speakers and an Additional Educational Needs Department.
The school has excellent facilities including a state-of-the-art Design & Technology workshop, Food & Nutrition workshops, networked IT suites, 1:1 iPads in Primary School and laptops for students in selected year groups in Secondary School, dance and drama studios as well as nine science laboratories, four art studios and comprehensive modern languages and humanities suites plus a self-service cafeteria.
In September 2016 BSB opened its brand new Jacques Rogge Sports Centre featuring a new Sports Hall, Gym, Fitness Suite, Dance Studio and a 25-metre indoor swimming pool. BSB is the only international school in Belgium to have its own pool.
The arts play a major role in the life of the school; music, drama and dance thrive and a wide ranges of performances are held regularly in the 240-seat theatre. The music department has a music technology suite, full-scale recording studio and a rehearsal studio.
A wide range of sports is offered, including rugby, football, hockey, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, athletics and basketball and the school participates successfully in ISGA as well as ISST. Similarly there is a wide range of enrichment activities in sport, music and drama with frequent opportunities for overseas travel and school journeys. Advice on higher and further education and on a choice of career is available to all students. Throughout the year multinational careers counsellors run events and host guest speakers to guide students in making their post-graduate plans.
In 2016, 100% of graduating students passed their IB Diploma or BTEC exams and 99% passed their A Levels. Our academic results are amongst the highest in Belgium and well above the worldwide average. All of our 2016 IB students took the full Diploma with everyone attaining 26 points or more, with an average IB Diploma point score of 36 (compared to a world IB average of 30 points). Over a third of students successfully took on the challenge of the Bilingual Diploma. 57% of our candidates obtained 36 points or more (compared with a world IB average around 22% last year). More than one in four students – 30% - achieved the Diploma with 40 points or more (against an IB world average of 7% last year).
Meanwhile, our BTEC results in Business, Sport and Hospitality were again extremely strong. Almost all of these students have combined this qualification with A Levels. Once again, all students at all levels, passed. A remarkable 72% of grades were Distinctions or Distinction *
At A Level, BSB achieved an impressive 99% pass rate, with 30% of grades at A*/A – well above the national level – and 59% at A*-B and 83% at A*-C. Some students have combined A Levels and BTEC courses with impressive success in both. That our students have done so well in a non-selective school where, for many, English is not the native language, is tremendous. The programmes are led by a highly committed and well-qualified team of teachers and support is organised throughout the two years to help individual students to be the best they can be.
From Harvard to Cambridge from medicine to architecture, our students head for top universities worldwide. There is a long list of famous BSB alumni including authors, TV series producers, actresses and Olympic medallists.
